Texas psycho Smells Like Yukon, leaves disappointed
WHITEHORSE (SLYwire) Two months after the launch of SmellsLikeYukon.com, the latest analytics reveal that the site is appealing to a wide variety of web surfers eager to waste things.
“For the most part, I think we attract Yukoners who hear Smells Like Yukon on CBC and are eager to waste more time than the six minutes it took to listen to the radio segment,” explains Smells Like Yukon Chief Information Officer J.D. Sparkles.
“However, our Google ranking for the search term ‘to waste someone’s time’ is pretty consistent at number two, so the site is slowly establishing itself as a place where people who’ve never heard the radio segment can waste time as well.”
On a more disturbing note, Sparkles discovered that someone from Bedford, Texas recently visited SmellsLikeYukon.com looking for information on how “to waste someone.” This visitor left—presumably disappointed—after viewing but a single page.
“After this unfortunate incident, I learned that we’re also ranking in the top three for the, um, less carefree and whimsical search term,” Sparkles says. “That’s not really the clientele we’re after. For one thing, we like our visitors to stay on the site a little longer. Then there’s the whole psychopathic element....”
To date, the majority of other search engine traffic to SmellsLikeYukon.com has come from long lost relatives looking for Jesse Devost, Americans and Turks who can’t spell “local,” and people who couldn’t find information about Burning Away the Winter Blues from a more appropriate online source—like the event’s own website.
“Going forward, we hope to build on the site’s strengths as a waste of time, continue poaching traffic from other Yukon sites that are poorly optimized, and carve out a new niche in the growing market related to geographical aromas.”
The next segment of Smells Like Yukon airs on CBC Yukon on April 04, 2007 at 7:20 a.m .
