Jesse Devost and Mark Koepke are a pair of locel yokels living in Whitehorse, Yukon. Together, they created the territorial phenomenon that is Smells Like Yukon and now share in writing and producing the radio series, not to mention blowing proceeds from an obscene stock option plan.
Jesse Devost
Growing up on Hornby Island, B.C., Jesse’s childhood was a carefree one, filled with forts tucked in cedar forests, sandcastles on sunny afternoons at the beach, and aspirations of one day becoming a public servant. Today, he is living the dream. His deepest regret in the duration of his
bureaucratic career lies in not finding the courage to say “I like your little beard” to the presenter at a government awards ceremony. An ultimate frisbee enthusiast, dabbler in the visual arts and media, and occasional contributor to Definitely Not the Opera, Jesse is more than just a government employee; he could best be described as doing a little of everything. Equally well-informed on pop culture, cartography, American politics, and the trivial and inane, he was once described by DNTO’s producers as the "second coolest guy in the Yukon." That Jesse can be heard saying again and again "If it’s funny the first time, it’s funny every time" might offer some insight into his runner-up status. He especially likes orange foods and those created in his likeness. One of his fondest memories is of eating chips and running through a field of wildflowers with his wife Jo one sunny day in July.
Mark Koepke
A Yukoner “born and raised,” Mark could be considered an authority on what smells like Yukon. With equal ease, he can deliver a diatribe on government sole-sourcing while adorned with sparkly pink barrettes; offer projections on the price of gold while peering out from a Marge Simpson wig; or, articulate the benefits of his exhaustive filing system while sporting his trademark pink shag cowboy hat. A grammatical watchdog of sorts, in possession of an impressive vocabulary, he still giggles at the word “mallet.” Among Mark’s favourite things are NONE of the following: science fiction and/or fantasy movies, oatmeal, pus or anything pus-like in word or concept, including festering dog bites and Coldplay. The creator of Driver’s License Darts, as well as the card game Black or Red, Mark cites the Flipper Lunch Club and his daughter Kate as his greatest living co-creations. A semi-retired "house hunk," Mark works occasionally as a freelance writer out of his home in Whitehorse. He shares that humble abode with his partner Stephanie, who is now raising two children on her own. Mark's favourite food is meat. |
